HOMEBOUND – NYC Screening Monday, August 18, 2014 7:30 PM – 9:40 PM (AMC 34th Street)

Three years ago, Homebound movie director/actor Fanny Veliz decided to make a film that portrays American Latinos in a positive way, a movie that tells a Universal story anyone can relate to. As a mom, she wants her kids to grow up and see people that look like them on the big screen not just playing the thugs and illegals.  Instead, they can see latinos being represented as lawyers, doctors, teachers, etc. Media has an impact in the way the rest of the country perceives us and in the way our children perceive themselves. Fanny Veliz truly believes it is time to change the inaccuracate truths on popular culture.

Recently, a study came out stating how bad the situation is for Latinos in the media: Statistic shows just how bad Hollywood’s Latino problem is.

Another article came out on the NY Daily News mentioning the same issue: Hispanics net roles major Hollywood movies study.

Homebound is the story of Richard Lynn, a successful young man who returns to his small hometown, El Campo, Texas. He has to help his father Gilberto who’s ill with cancer, run the family business, a dilapidated bar. Richard Lynn, accidentally falls in love for the first time with Sofia, a Venezuelan immigrant who speaks very little English.

As Richard Lynn befriends Sofia’s son, and is reminded of the friendships and culture of his hometown, he learns more about his father’s illness, the truth about his mother’s passing and their plans for him when he inherits it all. His secret desire to burn down the bar, which he blames for his mother’s death, surfaces as he questions everything, his past, his future, and his understanding of family.

The film is heartwarming, with inspiring performances, unexpected twists and a passionate ending that will delight audiences around the world.
